Container Handling Operations for Mining Sector
The Challenge
A gold mining operation in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem area required ongoing logistics support for the importation of mining equipment, chemicals, and consumables. The remote location, 280 kilometres from Tema Port, combined with the hazardous nature of certain cargo (cyanide solutions, explosives), demanded a logistics partner with specialised capabilities and an impeccable safety record.
Our Solution
McDan Shipping established a dedicated mining logistics desk with staff trained in dangerous goods handling, IMDG code compliance, and mine-site safety protocols. We obtained all necessary permits from the Ghana Minerals Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency. A scheduled container shuttle service was implemented between Tema Port and the mine site, operating three times weekly with GPS-tracked vehicles and trained escorts for hazardous shipments.
The Outcome
Over 1,200 containers were successfully delivered in the first 18 months of operation. Zero safety incidents were recorded despite the challenging terrain and cargo profile. The client reported a 35% reduction in supply chain lead times compared to their previous logistics arrangement.
